When local ceramicist Ann Goldberg was growing up in Brookline, Mass., she took art classes at a community arts center, not unlike Basalt’s Wyly. And it was an experience that not only helped shape her as an artist, it touched nearly every aspect of her life.

His eyes are dark orbs swimming in sea of calm above the ever-curious grin creeping at the edges of his mouth. They belie the quick and nimble work of his hands, dipping in and out of a tight-taut wreath of yarn on his loom. The pace of his handiwork is impossibly fast and its precision seems inhuman — Ismael Gutierrez Martinez grabs at four strands of yarn, dips his hand in at one end of the strands in his palm, then pulls it up from the other ... in a tenth of a second, maybe less.

Like fast-forwarding through the scary part in a movie, some of the students skip entire pages of their journals. Bold lettering that reads “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” or “death” in cursive writing, line the pages that their hands flutter over pretending that “this page really doesn’t mean anything to me.”

Others are painted black like the bottom of a well.

Some are bright pink, with swirly hearts and boys’ names in the middle.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — Ten-year-old Jordan Slack of New Castle is an artist. Art is something that she very much enjoys.

“It’s fun,” she said.

Slack is one of 12 young artists between 6 and 12 years old chosen to create original prayer flags for his holiness the Dalai Lama, who will be the featured speaker at Aspen Institute’s 2008 symposium: “His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Aspen: A Celebration of Tibetan Culture.”
