The Wyly Annex is an exciting new gallery space at 174 Midland Avenue, next to Bernard’s in Basalt. Please see new body of work in form of a site specific installation by Jody Guralnick.
Jody Guralnick received her MFA from Pratt Institute in New York. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Her exhibitions include the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, Art City Gallery in New York, David Floria Gallery in Aspen, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CU Art Museum in Boulder, New Contemporaries in London and Studio 10 in Zurich. Guralnick was a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome in 2013.
This body of work is a Refugium, a space where specimens both natural and man-made are preserved and reconfigured so that hybrid objects emerge. I hunt and gather plants, seed-heads, buds, cones, books and every-day ephemera, meticulously building, combining, and encasing the found material in porcelain and wax.
Today, these containers of information and their evolution are threatened with extinction. I use these objects as my raw material to preserve, study, and comprehend the increasingly tenuous relationship between nature and the man-made.
I celebrate – with a sense of urgency- all that is made by hand, paw, and claw.
